History of the United
Methodist Church
The United Methodist Church has a
distinguished heritage which begins with the lives and
ministries of John Wesley and his brother Charles who were
born in England in the early 1700s. The brothers
brought the Methodist movement to the colony of Georgia in
March of 1736 as Church of England missionaries. The
United Methodist Church was created in 1968 with the union
of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United
Brethren Church. Today, the United Methodist Church has approximately 11
million members world-wide with 34,892 local churches in
the United States and 6,934 organized churches outside of
the United States. It is the third largest religious
body in the United States of America.
