How to be involved and select committee guidelines
Church Council
We are the decision-making body of the local church
and accountable to the Charge Conference.
We plan, implement, and evaluate ministry that keeps our
congregation focused on our primary goal: making
disciples of Jesus Christ. We lead our church in
accomplishing church wide ministry goals. We
approve new ministries, adopt budget changes, and
approve leadership. Any person may attend Church
Council. Only Council members have vote.
Board of
Trustees
We oversee maintenance and care of our property, our
facilities, and the parsonage. We sign for loans
and handle insurance, equipment upgrades or replacement,
legal representation, and accessibility issues.
Nominations and Lay Leadership
The Pastor is the Chairperson and we identify,
develop, place, nurture, evaluate, and monitor spiritual
leadership for our congregation. We help people
find their interest, fill vacancies, update the Time &
Talent Survey, and assist the church in developing new
ministries and leadership with an eye on future
spiritual leadership.
Staff-Parish Relations
We confer and consult with the pastor and staff in the
use of their time, gifts, skills, and priorities for
effective ministry and service. We monitor the
relationships between the pastor, staff, and our
congregation, and conduct annual clergy and staff
assessments. We interview, hire, evaluate, and
dismiss for all paid staff positions other than clergy.
We enlist and recommend persons for ordained ministry
and missionary service. We recommend salary and
compensation for clergy and staff to the Church Council
for adoption at our annual Charge Conference. We
provide an annual recommendation in January to the
District Superintendent for pastoral continuation or a
change in pastoral leadership.
Building Committee
We meet with the architect and general contractor to
design, build, and oversee all aspects of Phase 1 of our
expansion, which includes a two-story Educational
Center.
Protection Policy
We write, revise, and implement policy and procedures
for protecting children, youth, and adults.
Finance
We compile the budget and submit it to the Church
Council for review and adoption, recommend additional
appropriations or changes in the budget for Church Council
approval, and conduct an annual audit. We track
financial giving, deposits, and disbursements for the
General Fund and Future Expansion Fund. We invest
funds and establish endowments.
Also, we develop and implement plans that raise additional
and sufficient funds to meet our general financial
needs.
Long-Range Planning
We pray, discuss, add to, revise, and receive God's
vision and our long-range planning efforts. We
involve the congregation and gather pertinent
information and analyses, keeping in mind present and
future needs. We monitor our visioning and
planning process.
Communications
We will oversee our web site, e-mail listings, and
church directories, indoor and outdoor signage,
advertising, promotion, and the publicizing of the
life of the church. Each committee, class, or group
is still responsible for their own promoting. Let us
know if we can assist you in your efforts.
Capital Campaign
We are responsible for conduction three-year Capital
Campaigns. The first began July 1, 2005. The
second begins July 1, 2008. We coordinate all
additional fundraising for the Future Expansion Fund.
Records and History
We care for all records and historical materials no
longer in current use, promote interest in the history of
our local congregation and The United Methodist Church,
and document and preserve the unfolding story of our
congregation.
Annual Fund
Steering Committee (serves as Stewardship Committee)
We promote spiritually focused stewardship education
throughout the year. We conduct our annual
financial campaign (usually in the Fall,) including
worship, mailings, selection of guests, and meal.
